Let's Talk Serums
This magical liquid that can make you feel like you are back in the science lab in school contains more active ingredients than other products. Serums help repair and prevent existing and future damage, making it far more powerful than any moisturiser. They don’t just look pretty on your dressing table.
Serums, as defined by the beauty industry, are concentrated skincare products designed to target a specific skin issue, be that ageing, acne or dullness. You apply them after cleansing and before moisturising and the idea is that their tiny little molecules penetrate deep into your skin to deliver a strong hit of “active ingredients”. Ingredients depend on the problem being targeted but common components include Vitamin C (to increase collagen), hyaluronic acid (for moisture) and niacin-amide (improves skin elasticity).
A Serum won’t replace your daytime or night-time moisturiser, but they will boost your anti-ageing results and overall skin health. The main reason to use a serum is to get extra nutrients into deeper layers of your skin that a regular moisturiser is not able to reach due to its large molecules; moisturisers can only penetrate the first layer of the skin, allowing them to hydrate and seal in moisture.
Apply your serum after your daily cleanser in your day-time and night-time routine. Wait a few minutes until the serum is fully absorbed, and then apply your moisturiser. That will allow you to lock and increase the benefits of the serum. At night you can apply your serum in larger quantity and let it work as you rest.
Start using a serum before signs of damage occur and you’ll achieve a graduate building of a firmer, healthier and youthful looking skin as you age. Of course, these high concentrated products work even after skin damage starts showing up, but without question, sooner is better than later!
Establish a long-term relationship with your serum. You will feel the improvement right away, but in the long term you’ll see the signs of damage fade and your skin will look younger, feel healthier and be firmer!
