What Causes Dandruff?

Pesky scalp issues can plague many, no matter the season. Typically characterized by white flakes accompanied by an itchy scalp or inflammation, dandruff is a common problem with many solutions, including our scalp-cleansing shampoos like Neuth France, Scalp Balancing Densifying Shampoo and the Hayah Laboratories, Trix Energising Shampoo. But what actually causes dandruff? Here are a few reasons why you might be itchy and flaky.

Dry Skin
The most common reason why dandruff and its symptoms occur is due to having a dry scalp. Such dryness can be attributed to cold weather, drier air, or a lack of hydration in your hair care products. The drier the scalp, the more flaky and itchy it will be.

Oily Skin
On the other hand, having an oily scalp can also cause dandruff. During times of hormonal change or even just stress, the body can produce excess sebum which mixes in with the dirt and dead skin cells on the scalp, creating flakes.

Not Shampooing Enough
Irregular shampooing or cleansing is also a culprit of dandruff production. Using too many styling products such as leave-in conditioner or hair spray and not shampooing regularly or properly cleansing can lead to product buildup on the scalp.

Sensitivity To Hair Products
Unfortunately, some hair products might not agree with our scalps. For some, using hair products with particular ingredients may cause a contact dermatitis reaction that results in flaking and itchiness. This allergic reaction warrants a trip to your doctor to identify the specificity of your allergy, as to avoid and prevent it in the future.
