How To Layer Your Skincare

Whether you have a 10-step routine or use two simple products, the order in which you put on your serum, oil, moisturiser and SPF can make them work to their full potential. Therefore, applying products according to consistency, from thin to thick, is essential to layering your skincare. Here are the steps on how to achieve your best face ever.

Step 1: Cleanser

This is the most important step, nothing from your other skincare products will work if you don’t have a clean canvas to start with. So cleansing in the morning and at night is essential. Plus, you need to remove dirt, oil, makeup and pollution that accumulate during the day.

Tip:

Dry Skin: Should look for a face wash with ingredients such as ceramides and glycerin to boost their skin’s barrier (an oil-based cleanser).

Combination/Oily Skin: Should look for a gel-based formula.

Sensitive Skin: A fragrance free, soothing formula.

Try:

Bubblzz, Berries Facial Foam

Neuth France, Purifying Cleansing System Gel

Nivea, MicellAIR Skin Breathe Micellar Water (Dry to Sensitive Skin) – you can pair this with the Zoe Amber, Reusable Makeup Remover Pads

Step 2: Toner

This is what’s standing between you and unclogged pores. For healthy skin you need a face toner. Use a gentle, soothing toner to remove oil and traces of dirt and grime. Toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin, or for people who want extra cleansing after wearing makeup. Please don’t grab a toner from your local supermarket as they have the harshest formulas.

Try:

Hathor, Sacred Rose Floral Water

Step 3: Eye Cream

As the skin around the eye is more delicate than the rest of your face, it requires its own specific gel or cream. Select an eye cream based on your needs. For example, creams that contain caffeine, will lessen the appearance of under-eye bags.

Try:

Eva Cosmetics, Gold Collagen Night Eye Contour Cream

Step 4: Serum

Think of serums as treatment for your specific skin needs, as they’ll help target any issues you may have like dark sports, dullness or acne. They also vary for different times of the day. AM serums have antioxidants, the most popular one is the vitamin C serum (just make sure you apply sunscreen after). For PM, a serum with retinol is best to help repair and stimulate collagen production.

Try:

Braes, Regarde Moi Facial Oil

Sensera Aromatherapy, La Jeunesse Gold Serum

Rhea Beauty, Keracell Secret Retinol Serum

Step 5: Moisturiser

This is the most important step, as your moisturiser hydrates your skin but also seals in all the prior ingredients. For the day try and use a light-weight moisturiser and a thicker face cream for the evening.

Try:

Essentials, Vitamin E Cream

Step 6: SPF

Want to ward off the ageing process and skin cancer this is an absolute essential final step in the morning. And no, you don’t need to put on sunscreen before you go to bed .

Try:

Kolagra, Sunscreen SPF 50+
